SUNDAY 17 MAY @ 7 ARTS LEEDS 2-6pm
Keranjeet Kaur Virdee MBE,
Chief Executive & Artistic Director
of South Asian Arts (SAA) U.K. will attend as the
Guest of Honour at the West Yorkshire Premiere of Cama Sood Hara by Haresh Sood,
with Pancho who will give 'Paw'tographs' (Chocolate Labrador & star of the film).
The film which premiered in cinemas in November 2024, is still going strong, wowing audiences wherever it tours. City by city, U.K. and abroad, the documentary film has received rave reviews from the public, celebrities, alongside politicians and dignitaries, (click here to see and hear these).
Haresh Sood who is U.K's first British Indian, Barrister and Filmmaker to combine these careers, has just returned from the Spanish introductory tour of the film with his chocolate Labrador Pancho, who is the real star of the film.
On Sunday, they will be both heading to Seven Arts in Chapel Allerton, in Leeds to impress audiences in the West Yorkshire Premiere with a special screening event of Cama Sood Hara, (the name which is a spin on an old Indian text). The film deals with finding inner happiness outside of marriage and delves deep into unspoken topics within personal relationships, highlighting many taboo subjects. Throughout the tour, film critics have branded the film as 'highly thought provoking & emotionally moving', 'very clever, hilarious & insightful' and 'simply a master-peice'. For the first time, we hear from a male on subjects which have never been discussed in this 'raw' and honest' film, which has attracted many family lawyers across the country who deal with matrimonial disputes. Haresh boldly deals with the expectations his culture had for him as a British Indian male, coupled with mainstream societal expectations to be married. He openly challenges whether marriage is really the key to a happy life and explains why he chooses to remain unmarried and why he adopted a beautiful chocolate Labrador instead. Keran says;
'Having run South Asian Arts-UK for 28yrs to harness the power of Music and Dance, we provide a safe space for children all the way to have the creative tools to realise their own potential in all fields including film. It is so wonderful to have to opportunity to catch a documentary made by Haresh Sood demonstrating the power of creativity to tell stories and share experiences that touch, move and question the status quo of culture expectations that we all have to navigate irrespective of which walk of life we are from. Moreover, I love the title of this documentary 'Cama Sood Hara' too which is a great play on words.
Personally, I am very curious to see how Haresh shares the quirky south 'asianess' we have all grown up with. I am ready to laugh and cry or both. It will be interesting to see how he has captured the nuances that are so unique to us and have to be experienced in order to be appreciate the complexity that each of us navigate to balance; duel cultures, identity, pride and value our heritage, while embracing its evolution and retention of its essence.
This documentary is ideal for anyone who wants to learn and understand a culture from a male perspective and all it takes to be South Asian/Punjabi/British.
I am really looking forward to attending this screening on Sunday 17th May 2026 at SEVEN Arts and encourage everyone to set time aside, be brave and support great story telling by a fellow Punjabi. This is documentary that is culturally relevant to me and, many of us that identify as British Asian, yet the topic's are global and people from any walk of life will connect and relate too.'
